Kelley Bagby

I grew up around woodworking tools (see picture, age 4-5ish) but only recently started doing some of my own woodworking.

Charles Kested is a U.S. Navy veteran and lifelong woodworker who overcame severe obstacles to complete an amazing woodworking project. A resident of of Johnstown, New York, he has spent the past 10 years using his scrollsaw to carve a full-size exact replica of America’s Declaration of Independence. We salute Charlie Kested for his exemplary character, courage and exacting woodworking skills.

Chip carving is a form of relief carving in which the carver removes precise chips from the surface of the wood with a small extremely sharp knife. Mickey Hudspeth will demonstrate what chip carving is, the safety issues involved and demonstrate various types of cuts including cutting triangles, canoe shaped chips, rosettes and drawing and carving freehand. Then each student will practice under Mickey’s supervision by chip carving on practice boards.

If you don’t have a sharpened carving knife, don’t let that deter you – we will have a couple extra on hand for late sign-ups.

Those of you who read our Wood News every month will recognize Mickey’s name from the October 2010 article on his Incredible Homemade Workshop.

He is also well known around these parts for his award winning chip carvings, having taken 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in the chip carving category at the Smoky Mountain Wood Carver’s show this summer. The picture to the right is of one of his pieces that we have on display at Highland, and it gives you a good idea of what Mickey can teach you to do. Pretty incredible stuff!

Hi there Woodworkers!

Just wanted to let you know that the November edition of the Highland Wood News is out and ready for you to read.

We have an exciting issue this month, with contributions from a few regulars and a couple new items for you as well! Customer Richard Rank gives us his take on how this is shaping up to be The Year of the Workbench; Alan Noel presents an in-depth article providing many tips for choosing a finish; and Steven Johnson, our Down to Earth Woodworker, delves into many topics this month, including a primer on how to prepare your workshop for a potential disaster as well as a continuation of his column from last month, where he discussed the future of woodworking.

We also have several great video links for you, including a lesson on how to sharpen a plane blade, a follow-along video for assembling the affordable European workbench, and the video everyone has been talking about – Roy Underhill and a piece of southern fried chicken versus a Sawstop. Check it out here if you haven’t seen it yet, and watch it again if you have!

All this plus some great deals makes this month’s Wood News a great read. But don’t take my word for it – go take a look yourself!

So Roy Underhill visited Highland Woodworking this weekend, and while he was there he took a look at our power tool selection. He was especially interested in the SawStop table saw, particularly in its regional capabilities. Sure, the SawStop works on a New York hot dog, but in Atlanta, we tend towards the southern fried cooking end of the food spectrum for testing our power tools. The following video shows what happened when Roy decided to double check the saw for us:

Matt Vanderlist has been busy since returning from Woodworking in America – I spent some time this afternoon catching up on his entertaining Spoken Wood podcasts.

My favorites from among his new ones include one by Chris Schwarz on workbenches (and comparing them to baking homemade bread) and one by Kari Hultman where she talks about the personalities of her wooden planes.

Check them out – they are a great Friday afternoon distraction!
