The Wikipedia definition of Woodworking is “the activity or skill of making items from wood, and includes cabinet making, wood carving, joinery, carpentry, and woodturning.” Based on this definition, woodworkers are made up of a variety of different people: cabinetmakers, woodcarvers, carpenters, woodturners, and many others.

This month, we want to know how you classify yourself (or if you even do) when it comes to woodworking? Maybe you dabble in a bit of everything and overall you just consider yourself a woodworker. Or maybe you focus solely on lathe work and are just a woodturner.

If your answer isn’t among the options, please choose ‘Other’ and write it in!

  1. I don’t like to catoragize myself. Sometimes I consider myself accomplished, but just when I do, I make mistakes. Then I have to reconsider. Make sense? I didn’t think so. Not for me either!!

  2. It would be better to use check boxes than a radio check( which allows only one choice)

  3. What a Great business you have at Highland ! Sure wish we had a similar establishment
    In Canada. All the best

  4. I really enjoy making high end furniture in my home shop where I like to focus on pieces inspired by 18th century antiques, especially pieces with inlay. However, three morning a week I donate my time at a Habitat for Humanity woodshop where we build porch furniture and custom cabinetry. The shop itself is a Quonset hut, built on city property by the marines as a training activity and then leased by the city of Beaufort, SC to Habitat for $1 per year. Almost all of the shop equipment was donated to Habitat. Many of our products are constructed using left over framing materials donated to Habitat by local home builders. Those items are then sold at the ReStore with 100% of the sale proceeds going toward construction of new Habitat homes.

  5. # 1 – I hope that I can continue my work which involves quite a bit of manual work.- I am very thankful that battery tools, which are lighter, as powerful, and improving rapidly, I speak of the new water lithium battery.

  6. I am a Wood Carver, I enjoy the fact that Highland carries such high quality tools that are virtually not available any wear else.

  7. As a Wood Carver I don’t think the question, really applies to my work, Finding a Subject, the right wood and how I will approach the subject is about the best I can do.

  8. I’m 85years old and just got interested in woodworking when I retired 2 1 2 years ago. Lov e the smell of cut wood and the appearance of an object out of a hunk of wood. Maybe I’m just a wood worker.

  9. The bottom line is this craft/hobby needs to be satisfying for you and you alone assuming you aren’t working for someone or trying to make a living at it.
